St Patricks Day is just around the corner and I had some 🍀 green yarn at hand. So I decided it was the perfect time to make myself a St Paddy’s sweater with a nice boat neck button-up collar resembling a leprechaun’s vest… or at least I tried 😁

I also wanted a simple and beginner-friendly pattern that anyone could make.

CONSTRUCTION

This boat neck crochet sweater features a simple construction with a basic half double crochet back loop stitch and the single crochet stitch, making it super easy to make.

This pattern is worked from side to side in one simple stitch, and in 6 separate sections at a time. Using the humble Red Heart Super Saver yarn in the color Frosty Green makes it the perfect ensemble for St Patrick’s Day! 🍀

Additionally, functional buttons are added to the collar, and an accent color (Pink) just to jazz it up a notch!

Gauge: 13 Hdc BLO Sts x 7 Rows = 4 x 4” / 10 x 10 cm

  • Prepare a pattern gauge to get the right size. You may need to adjust your tension or change the hook size to achieve the same gauge.

Instructions

PART 1: Back Panel

The foundation row will determine the length of your sweater. Adjust to your preference or follow the pattern below

  1. Foundation Row: Ch 75 [75/ 81/ 81/ 88] [88/ 94/ 94/ 101] + 1, turn
  2. Row 1: In the 2nd Ch from your hook, work a Hdc St, and in each St across, Ch 1 turn
  3. Row 2: Hdc BLO on each St across, Ch 1 turn
  4. Next Rows: Rep Row 2 for a total of 28 [32/ 35/ 39/ 42] [46/ 49/ 53/ 56] Rows
  5. Bind off
 

Part 2: Front Panel

  1. Foundation Row: Ch 75 [75/ 81/ 81/ 88] [88/ 94/ 94/ 101] + 1, turn
  2. Row 1: In the 2nd Ch from your hook, work a Hdc St and in each St across, Ch 1 turn
  3. Row 2: Hdc BLO on each St across, Ch 1 turn
  4. Row 3: Rep Row 2 for a total of 6 [8/ 9/ 11/ 12] [14/ 15/ 16/ 18] Rows
  5. Next Row: Sk 1, Hdc2tog BLO, Hdc BLO across, Ch 1 turn
  6. Next Row: Hdc BLO across until the 4th last St, Hdc2tog BLO, Sk 1, Ch 1 turn

Note: Turn your work one direction (clockwise) at all times to ensure a tidier workmanship

7. Next Rows: Rep Steps 5 & 6 for a total of 6 [6/ 7/ 7/ 7] [7/ 8/ 8/ 9] decrease Rows
8. Bind off and make a second piece

 

Part 3: Sleeves

  1. Foundation Row: Ch 53 [53/ 53/ 53/ 50] [50/ 49/ 49/ 45]  + 1, turn
  2. Row 1: In the 2nd Ch from your hook, work a Hdc St and in each St across, Ch 1 turn
  3. Row 2: Hdc BLO on each St across, Ch 1 turn
  4. Next Rows: Rep Row 2 for a total of 23 [25/ 26/ 28/ 30] [32/ 33/ 35/ 37] rows
  5. Next Row: Turn to the Row side and work 1 Sc into each rows/ post across, Ch 10 + 1 turn
  6. New Row 1: From the 2nd Ch from hook, Sc each St across, Slst 2 on row side, Ch 1 turn (10 Sts)
  7. Row 2: Sk prev 2 Slsts, Sc BLO across, Ch 1 turn
  8. Row 3: Rep Rows 1 & 2 until the end of the row
  9. Bind off if your last St is at the bottom of the cuff.
  10. Fold the sleeve in half and insert your hook at the bottom of the cuff through both pcs and Sc each St across to join
  11. Bind off and make a 2nd piece
 

Part 4: Assembling

  1. Place the front panel on top of the back panel and place SM to secure the sides.

    Note that there will be a 2in / 5cm gap in the center

  2. Sc both shoulder panels together until the SM. Rep on the other side
  3. Place a SM on the 23 [25/ 26/ 28/ 30] [32/ 33/ 35/ 37] St from the top on both sides.
  4. Insert your hook at the bottom of both body panels and Sc both panels together until the SM. Do not bind off

Attaching Sleeve

  1. Take your sleeve and turn it RS out.
  2. Insert the sleeves through the armhole (see image above).
  3. Place SM along the sides to align and secure the sleeve to the armhole in the round.
  4. Sc each St of both pcs together in the round. Slst to join.
  5. Bind off and rep Steps 4 – 8 on the other side.
  6. Bind off

Make sure the seams are aligned to the body’s seam.

Part 5: Middle Section

  1. Place 1 SM on the 6.5 [7.0/ 7.5/ 8.0/ 8.5] [9.0/ 9.5/ 10/ 10.5] inch / 17 [18/ 19/ 20/ 22] [23/ 24/ 25/ 27] cm from the top, along the inner front panel on each side

    This should be the same length as your armhole

  2. Row 1: Pick up the last St on the inner Left panel, and work Hdc BLO Sts on each St until the SM, Ch 1 turn
  3. Row 2: Hdc BLO each St across, Ch 1 turn
  4. Next Row: Rep Step 3 for a total of 4 rows.
  5. Bind off if your last St is at the bottom Row
  6. Insert your hook through the last Row at the top and work 2 Sc Sts on each Row, Slst 2 on the body panel, turn (8 Sts)
  7. Sk prev 2 Slsts, Sc across, Ch 1 turn
  8. Sc each St across, Slst 2, turn
  9. Rep Steps 6 & 7 until the bottom of the neckline.
  10. Bind off
  11. Insert your hook through the 2nd SM on the Right panel and Ch 8 + 1, turn
  12. Rep Steps 7 & 6 for 5 total rows
  13. Next take your button and measure the number of Sts the button would need to go through.
  14. Take that number and minus the 8 Sts that you have and divide that into 2. – If you don’t have an even number, work the bigger number on the outer side.

    Make sure to check that the button fits through. It should be slightly on the snug side

  15. For ref, I have worked 2 Sc, Ch 3, Sc 3, Ch 1 turn
  16. Sc each St and Ch across, Slst 2, turn
  17. Rep Steps 6 & 7 for 6 more rows
  18. Rep Step 14 – 15
  19. Next, Sc each St across, and Sc evenly along the neckline until you’re at the other side of the panel, Ch 1 turn
  20. Sc each St across, Ch 1 turn
  21. Rep Step 19 for a total of 4 rows or until you’ve reached your pref height. 
  22. Bind off
 

Part 6: Accent Color

  1. Take your accent color (Pink) / (any colored yarn of your choice) and place the front panels together, ready to join
  2. Insert your hook at the bottom of the panel through the back loop of both pcs starting from the right back loop and then to the left back loop. 
  3. Draw up a loop, then insert your hook through the next Sts back loop from the right then into the left loop, Slst
  4. Rep Step 3 until you’ve reached the top of the collar.
  5. Cont to Slst up along the collar, then around the neckline, and back down towards the other collar.
  6. Finally, pinch the bottom collar together with the front panel and Slst across to close.
  7. On the last St, bind off leaving a tail to close up the round.
  8. Thread the yarn through a tapestry needle and insert the needle under both loops of the 1st St. 
  9. Pull through and then insert the needle between the last Sts loop and pull through to close. Weave in to secure
 

Part 7: Adding Buttons

  1. Add buttons by aligning the button to the buttonhole at the back collar. Using your accent color to sew together.
  2. Insert them through the buttonhole to ensure they fit well once done.
 

Part 8: Bottom Edging

  1. Foundation Row: Insert your hook through the bottom side of the body panel and Ch 6 + 1, turn (clockwise)
  2. Row 1: Work 6 Sc Sts across, Slst 2 into the body panels row side, turn (clockwise)
  3. Row 2: Sk 2 Slsts, Sc 6, Ch1 turn
  4. Next Rows: Rep Rows 1 & 2 in the round
  5. On the last row, fold the edging together (RS) and Slst the back loop of both rows together. Rep on each St across
  6. Bind off and weave in all loose ends.
