Well let me tell you, there are a few ways you can start a new row in the crochet world, and mine if probably no different. But my way not only prevent gaps at the beginning of the row but it also look like a stitch rather than a chain.

So lets say the pattern calls to make 10 half double crochet stitches and 2 rows. I would chain 10 AND PLUS ONE more chain + 1, insert my hook through the 2nd chain from hook, and make that half double crochet stitch and across the chain. I would again chain 1 and turn my work, insert my hook through the first stitch and make that half double crochet stitch and across. DONE.
