DESIGN INSPIRATION

Black Crochet Ghost Sweater

The idea for this sweater came from wanting something that felt festive and fun for Halloween but also versatile enough to wear all season long.

Instead of creating a design that only works for one night, the crochet ghost design gives it a playful, slightly retro vibe that’s eye-catching without being over the top.

It’s the kind of piece you can throw on for a school Halloween event, a fall get-together, or just lounging at home.

And if you really want to make it stand out, you can take it up a notch by working in some glow-in-the-dark crochet yarn.

Imagine your little ghost shining at night while you’re out trick-or-treating or heading to a Halloween party. It’s such a simple detail, but it adds that extra wow factor.

CONSTRUCTION

glow in the dark crochet ghost

This easy crochet Halloween sweater is made for advance beginners using just a couple of simple stitches, the half double crochet (Hdc) and single crochet (Sc) stitch.

The pattern is broken down into approachable sections, so you can work on it piece by piece without feeling overwhelmed.

Front & Back Panels

You’ll begin by crocheting one large rectangular base which is the back panel of your sweater.

Both front and back panels are built up with rows of half-double crochet, which gives the fabric a soft, flexible texture that feels great to wear.

You’ll add a long ribbing detail at the bottom. This ribbing isn’t just decorative; it creates subtle slits on each side of the sweater, giving it more movement and a relaxed, comfortable fit.

Sleeves

The sleeves are made separately, and this is where you can have a little fun. They’re designed to be slightly oversized with longer cuffs than usual, adding a bit of a costume-inspired flair.

The cuffs hug the wrist nicely, while the sleeve itself remains cozy and roomy—perfect for layering over a t-shirt or tank top.

Ghost Motif

The star of this project is, of course, the ghost! The crochet ghost motif is worked directly onto the front panel using the float method.

If you’ve never tried this technique before, don’t worry because the video tutorial walks you through each step on how to carry and pin the main yarn, as well as how to Hdc through both the front and back loops to keep everything neat and together.

tapestry crochet float method
Float Method

This method gives the ghost a smooth, seamless finish that really pops against the sweater background.

👉 A quick tip: since this design uses darker yarn, don’t ignore the challenge of working with black. Stitches can be hard to see, especially in the evenings.

To make things easier, crochet under a bright lamp or natural daylight and if you want extra comfort, try a light-up crochet hook. It’ll save your eyes and keep your stitches neat.

Assembly

Once all your panels and sleeves are finished, it’s time to bring everything together.

You’ll seam the pieces with a simple single crochet stitch or a whipstitch, attach the sleeves, and finish off the neckline.

Materials Needed

Choosing a classic black yarn paired with a glow-in-the-dark yarn from Hombrys Yarn for the ghost face gives this sweater its playful, spooky charm.

I’m using a category 4 medium-weight acrylic yarn by Red Heart Super Saver. It’s budget-friendly, durable, and adds just the right amount of warmth.

Care Tips: To keep your sweater looking its best, wash acrylic yarn pieces on a delicate cycle with cold water and a little conditioner. This helps the fibers stay soft and smooth, making your handmade garment extra comfy to wear.

The Ghost Pattern chart only comes in one size measured at 9 W x 12 H in / 23 W x 30 H cm based on gauge.

This tapestry crochet pattern comes with detailed step-by-step video instructions on how to create the ghost pattern and how to incorporate it seamlessly into the sweater design.

If you prefer to use a different yarn, the best yarn to substitute would be any worsted-weight yarn in category 4, or you could look for an alternative here at yarnsub.com to find the best match for your needs.

Tips before Starting

  • Hook Size: Always check the recommended hook size. Using the wrong one can throw off your gauge and the fit of your top.

  • Tapestry Method: Choose the style you prefer. Carry the yarn inside stitches, hide it between, or use the float method (pinning every 4–6 stitches).

  • Yarn Choice: A medium-weight yarn works best, especially breathable blends for warmer weather. (Check out Yarn Sub for great options.)

  • Customization: Add your own flair with colors, edging, or length adjustments.

  • Gauge: Don’t skip the gauge swatch. It’s the key to making sure your finished top fits as intended. Use this Gauge Calculator as your guide.
