If there’s one crochet motif that truly stands the test of time, it’s the granny square. From the retro bohemian blankets of the 1970s to today’s runway-worthy garments, granny squares have proven over and over again that they’re anything but old-fashioned.

They’re bold, endlessly customizable, and full of creative potential.

What I love most about granny squares is how they transform into completely different pieces depending on how you assemble them. Picture a breezy beach cover-up made from delicate lace-weight squares, a cozy oversized cardigan built from flower motifs, a flirty crop top with sun-inspired designs, or even a matching bikini set that turns heads at the pool.

The possibilities are genuinely endless, and each finished piece feels like solving a beautiful mosaic puzzle.

I’ve put together some of my favorite granny square projects to inspire your next make. So let’s dive into some seriously stylish granny square ideas for this season!

Best Yarn to Use?

Choosing the right yarn can make or break your granny square project, so let’s talk about some of my top picks. For beach cover-ups and summer garments, I love working with fingering weight yarns like Alize Diva Silky.

It’s lightweight, breezy, and gives your finished piece a beautiful drape that flows with your body. The silky finish also adds a touch of elegance that makes your handmade garment look store-bought.

For cardigans and pieces that need a bit more structure, cotton yarn like Hobbii Rainbow 8/4 is a fantastic choice. It’s breathable, machine washable, and incredibly durable,  meaning your cardigan will hold up beautifully through countless wears and washes. Cotton also has a lovely matte finish that makes stitch definition really pop.

If you’re after something extra soft and eco-friendly, give rayon or bamboo blends like TruBoo by Lion Brand a try. These yarns are moisture-wicking, silky smooth against the skin, and have a gorgeous drape. They’re a wonderful sustainable option for warm-weather garments.

As a general rule, choose your yarn weight based on the season and the drape you’re going for. Lighter weights (fingering, sport) create airy, lacey pieces for summer, while worsted and bulky weights make cozy blankets and cold-weather accessories. When in doubt, always swatch first!

  • Always make a gauge swatch — each square’s finished size affects the whole garment, so getting your gauge right from the start saves headaches later
  • Block your squares before assembling — blocking evens out your stitches and makes joining so much neater and more satisfying
  • Use WIP tags to track your hook size, yarn lot, and progress — there’s a free download available on the site to help you stay organized
  • Use stitch markers when joining — they keep everything aligned and prevent you from accidentally skipping stitches
  • Leave at least 6-inch tails when fastening off — longer tails make weaving in ends so much easier and more secure
