DESIGN INSPIRATION

american flag crochet crop top

This red white and blue crochet halter crop top was inspired by the classic American flag – bold stripes, starry details, and all that summer energy.

I wanted something that felt festive, breathable, and flirty, but still functional and wearable in all sizes. So, I went with a halter crop top style with a racerback, which gives a sporty, stylish edge and adjustable tie straps that let you customize the fit to your body.

I also wanted to create a pattern that’s perfect for all skill levels. The video tutorial breaks it down step-by-step, making it ideal for those just getting into beginner crochet top patterns.

If you already know your way around a hook, you’ll find this top works up fast and is super satisfying to finish.

I also made sure this size-inclusive crochet top works for every body type. From XS to 5XL, the instructions guide you through customizing your top so it fits just right.

CONSTRUCTION

american flag crochet crop top

This crochet halter crop top is made using simple stitches and techniques, making it a great project for beginners.

To create this top, you’ll need DK weight cotton spandex yarn in red, white, and blue. I am using Cascade Fixation yarn, which provides that breathability for summer wear as well as that beautiful stretch that you see a lot in crochet garments (aka swimwear).

American Flag Crochet Halter Crop Top flat lay

I am also using a 3.0 mm hook for a tight finish. You’ll also want to have a stitch marker, a tapestry needle, some sewing pins, and a pair of scissors on hand.

For those who prefer a bit more coverage, you can optionally use these supportive silicone nipple pads or bra cups.

The stitches used in this pattern include single crochet (Sc), half double crochet (hdc), chain (Ch), and slip stitch (Sl St).

The construction of this crochet top starts with the bottom band, which can easily be adjusted to fit snugly around your chest or for that added length!

You’ll then add the cups by working two triangular shapes while maintaining the colors of the American flag. Tiny white stars are then added to the blue cup to finish off the look!

The straps and racerback section are added to connect them all together.

The back ties are added last and can be adjusted to your comfort level. This gives the top flexibility and allows for a secure, snug fit.

Fit Tips:

  • You can make the top longer if you want more coverage. Just add a few extra rows at the bottom.

  • Add lining or these silicone pads if you want extra support or modesty.

  • Customize the cup size and band width based on your body. The pattern explains how to do this, and the video tutorial shows it visually.

With adjustable halter straps and a racerback, this top will stay in place comfortably throughout the day!
