If you’ve been wanting a crochet beanie with ears using the alpine stitch that’s beginner‑friendly, this is exactly that kind of pattern.

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Beanie with Ears

This crochet beanie with ears is one of those projects that makes you smile while you’re making it. It’s cozy, textured, and has just the right amount of personality. The ears add a playful touch without making it feel over-the-top, so it works just as well for kids as it does for fun-loving adults.

One of the best things about this beanie is how fast it comes together. You can easily finish it in under two hours, which makes it perfect for last-minute gifts or when you just want a quick, satisfying crochet win. It’s also a great project if you’re feeling stuck and need something fun to get your crochet mojo back.

Even though it looks detailed, the pattern is very approachable. Once you get into the rhythm of the alpine stitch, it becomes relaxing and repetitive. It’s the kind of project where you can crochet while watching a show and still end up with something that looks impressive.

And of course, having a free pattern and video tutorial makes it even better. You don’t have to guess or stress. Everything is laid out clearly so you can just enjoy the process.

How to Crochet the Alpine Stitch Beanie in the Round

alpine stitch beanie

The alpine stitch is known for its beautiful raised texture, and working it in the round is easier than it looks. This pattern walks you through the process step by step, starting from the top of the hat while working a repeat of two rows, building the body of the beanie. Once you understand the stitch pattern, it flows really nicely.

The two row repeat consist of chains, the half double crochet (Hdc St) stitch and the front post double crochet (FP Dc St) stitch. Learning to alternate between the Hdc and Fp Dc is all there is to it.

While crocheting in the round might seem a little intimidating at first,  the trick to work in even numbers, and ending on the opposite stitch. Having a stitch marker helps tremendously.

The texture adds stretch while still holding its shape, which is exactly what you want in a beanie. It also means the hat feels cozy without being stiff or uncomfortable.

If you’ve never worked front post stitches before, this is a great project to learn them. The video tutorial shows exactly where to place your hook and how the stitch should look when it’s done correctly. Seeing it in action makes a big difference.

By the time you finish the beanie, you’ll feel much more confident using the alpine stitch in other projects. It’s one of those skills that opens the door to lots of new patterns. Here’s a step by step tutorial on how to do the Alpine Stitch tutorial.

How to Make and Customize Crochet Ears (Pointy or Curved)

crochet beanie with ears

The ears are what really set this beanie apart, and they’re surprisingly straightforward to make. If you prefer pointy ears, all you need to do is seam the top of the hat from one end towards the other end. You can either seam them using the mattress stitch or just single crochet them across.

For a softer curved ears with gentler shaping, the trick is to start your first seam along the post side of the first stitch and end along the last post stitch.

And to tighten the look even further, just take a blunt tapestry needle and the same yarn color, and weave the sides in a diagonal line across the corner of the hat which makes the ears. That’s all there is to it!

Materials, Yarn Choice, and Hook Size

For this beanie, I am using the Red Heart Super Saver yarn in the color Royal and Black. The yarn itself is durable and easy to work with. It’s also budget-friendly, which is always a bonus when you want to make more than one hat.

This yarn holds stitch definition well, so all those raised ridges really pop. That’s especially important for textured patterns like this one. Since it’s acrylic, it’s also easy to care for, making it practical for everyday wear.

The recommended hook size for this pattern is a 5mm hook. This size helps create a fabric that’s not too loose and not too stiff. It gives the beanie a comfortable fit while still showing off the stitch pattern clearly.

If you tend to crochet tightly or loosely, don’t be afraid to adjust your hook size slightly. Small changes can make a big difference in how the finished beanie fits and feels. Here’s a great tutorial on how to measure a gauge correctly.

Measure as You go

These measurements are just an estimate and a guide to start with. As you crochet your beanie, constantly measuring (trying it on) will ensure your creation fits smoothly.

Tips for the Perfect Fit: Gauge, Sizing, and Adjustments

Getting the right fit is key when it comes to crochet beanies. Gauge plays a big role, especially with textured stitches like the alpine stitch. Even being slightly off can affect how snug or loose the hat feels.

Before starting, it helps to make a small swatch and check your gauge. Use the recommended hook size and yarn, and crochet the same stitch pattern used in the beanie. This gives you a good idea of how your stitches compare to the pattern.

The beanie is worked from the top down, which makes sizing adjustments easy. You can add or remove rounds to change to adjust the length as you go. This flexibility makes the pattern great for all head sizes.

Trying the beanie on as you crochet is one of the best ways to get a perfect fit. If it feels too tight or too loose, just make the necessary changes needed at the very beginning to save time and frustration.

Common Questions – Answered

  1. I’m a beginner, is this pattern too hard? This pattern is designed for the advance newbie. Once you’ve mastered the front post double crochet stitch, half double crochet stitch and working in the round,  its just a matter of repetition! Not hard at all!

  2. What materials do I need? Any yarn of choice (around 50-200 yards), a 5mm crochet hook, a tape measure, a yarn needle and some stitch markers. This project uses the Red Heart Super Saver in the color Royal.

  3. Can I use a different yarn? Absolutely! Just keep in mind that weight and material affect warmth and size, so you might need to adjust the pattern slightly.

  4. How do I make the hat bigger or smaller? Chain more stitches for a larger hat, and fewer for a smaller one. You can also adjust the number of rows to fine-tune the fit.

  5. My hat is turning out misshapen! Remember to always check your stitch count regularly and ensure you’re working in the round. If it’s still wonky, try a smaller hook to achieve a tighter fabric.

  6. Can I add a different stitch pattern? Yes! Simple stitches like the double crochet or half double crochet will work perfectly! Intricate patterns will be gorgeous!

  7. How do I close the top of the hat? You can use the mattress stitch or single crochet using your crochet hook.

  8. The hat doesn’t fit! Refer to the chart above! Measure the head circumference for the size that you are making and make a swatch. Adjust the chain where necessary for a perfect fit.

  9. Can I make a beanie with other hooks? Sure! you can go up or down a size if needed. Keep in mind that a smaller hook creates a denser fabric, while a larger one results in a looser, drapier beanie.
