As the days start to get warmer and the sun shines brighter, many of us are getting excited about all the outdoor activities and events that come with spring and summer. And what better way to prepare for these seasons than to start thinking about what to make for your next crochet spring/ summer wardrobe collection?
Spring and summer are all about light and breezy clothing, with a variety of stylish crochet tops to choose from, perfect for any warm-weather wardrobe. Not only are they comfortable and stylish, but they can be customized to fit your personal style and size.
Whether you’re an experienced crocheter or a beginner, there are endless possibilities when it comes to spring and summer crochet top patterns. From lacy summer tops to flowy designs with simple construction to more structured and fitted options, whatever the style, there’s something for everyone.
What’s your Style: Light and Airy or Fitted?
When it comes to crochet tops for spring and summer, there are two main styles to consider: light and airy or cool and fitted. Let’s explore both styles below. Or you can go jump straight to the Free Crochet Pattern options below:
Light and Airy Crochet Tops
Light and airy crochet tops are perfect for keeping cool in warm weather. These tops are usually made with lightweight yarns but are not limited to open stitches, and lacy patterns only.
The key to creating a light and airy crochet top is to choose a yarn that is lightweight and has a soft drape such as my favorite yarn of all time Coboo and Truboo by Lion Brand and Woolike Simili Lane by Loops & Threads. (This is what I used for the Halter top above)
Chose between a selection of Cotton yarn, linen, and bamboo yarns which are great choices for this type of lightweight top, or you can also opt for fingering weight yarn instead.
When it comes to crochet patterns, there are so many free and paid options available on the web today to choose from. Such as choosing between a simple tank, a crochet halter top, an easy crochet crop top, or even a basic crochet tee are all popular choices for light and airy spring/ summer tops.
To create a lacy effect, try working with open stitches like chain stitches, or basic stitches like the double crochet, and treble crochet stitches. (Like this image above)
You can also experiment with adding some embellishments for a more feminine look for your next spring or summer holiday.
Fitted Crochet Tops
Fitted crochet tops are a great choice if you prefer a more structured look. These summer season tops are usually made with a tighter gauge and stitch pattern, creating a more fitted silhouette.
When making a fitted crochet top, it’s important to choose a yarn that has some stretch or elasticity, such as Cascade Fixation Yarn which is a blend of cotton and elastane. (Also used in the Arrowhead Top above)
Another great option is the Alize Diva Stretch perfect for Bralettes and Swimsuits. You can read more about this here.
Simple crochet stitches like single crochet and half-double crochet stitches are great choices for creating a tight and sturdy finish.
You can also experiment with different stitch patterns, such as the alpine stitch, Front & Back Post Stitches, or other textured stitches to create a unique design.
Tips for Making the Perfect Spring and Summer Crochet Top
No matter what style of crochet top you choose, there are some tips and tricks to keep in mind. Here are a few things to consider when making your perfect spring or summer garment:
Choosing the right yarn weight is an important consideration when making a crochet top. Look for lightweight and breathable yarns like cotton, linen, or bamboo, or go for fingering-weight yarns.
These types of yarns will keep you cool and comfortable in the warm weather. Cotton is a popular choice as it is soft, easy to work with, and comes in a variety of colors.
Linen is also a great choice for its durability and amazing drape, while bamboo has natural moisture-wicking properties.
Using the right crochet hook size is also crucial to achieving the right tension and gauge for your pattern.
Make sure to use a hook that matches the recommended gauge for your pattern. If you use a hook that is too small or too large, it can result in an ill-fitting top that is either too tight or too loose.
For a light and airy top, I would go for a much larger hook size than the recommended size. This will give you looser stitches and a wider finish giving you that airy and gappy finished garment.
When it comes to making a fitted crochet top, like a bralette or a form-fitting tee, a smaller hook size is recommended to achieve a tight, snug fit that hugs the body.
This will help to prevent any gaps or holes from being see-through, which is particularly important for crochet tops that are meant to be worn as a standalone piece.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that a smaller hook size will also result in tighter tension, which can make the top less stretchy and more form-fitting, hence it’s a good idea to check out these stretchy and lightweight yarns.
Checking your measurements is another important step in making the perfect spring or summer crochet top. Make sure to measure yourself accurately and choose a pattern that compliments your size.
It’s also a good idea to try on your crochet garment periodically as you go to ensure the perfect fit.
Adding embellishments is a great way to make your crochet top more unique and personal. Try adding some decorative beads, or other embellishments to enhance the overall look of your top.
You can also experiment with different textures and stitch patterns to create a one-of-a-kind design.
Experimenting with different colors is also a fun part of making crochet tops. Have fun experimenting with different hues and shades.
You can choose a color that complements your skin tone or opt for a bold and bright color to make a statement. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors to create a unique look.
In conclusion, choosing the best yarn, and crochet hook size, checking your measurements, adding embellishments, and experimenting with colors are all important considerations when making the perfect spring or summer crochet top.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can create a top that is both comfortable and stylish, and that reflects your personal style and taste.
